Key Dates to Remember
- Full Road Closure: 19 May to 22 August 2025
- Northbound Closure: 23 August to 17 October 2025
The A435 Evesham Road is set to undergo major construction work from May to October 2025, resulting in road closures that could affect your journeys to and from our walking meeting points. To help you plan ahead, we’ve outlined the key dates, alternative routes, and detours to ensure a smooth journey for all walkers.
What’s Happening?
The A435 Cycleway Section 2 Phase 2 project will improve connectivity between Cheltenham and Bishop’s Cleeve by creating a new shared-use cycleway and footway. However, the project will require the following closures:
Full Road Closure (19 May to 22 August 2025):
- The A435 will be closed in both directions between the Cheltenham Racecourse roundabout and Hyde Lane/Southam Lane junction.
- This closure is necessary for bridge realignment and construction safety.
Northbound Closure (23 August to 17 October 2025):
- Only southbound traffic (Bishop’s Cleeve to Cheltenham) will be allowed.
- Northbound traffic will be diverted to allow construction on the east side of the road.
Pedestrian and cyclist access will remain open throughout the closures.

Meeting Points and Suggested Detours
We’ve broken down the alternative routes for walkers based on the meeting points and where you’re traveling from. Use these suggestions to avoid delays and ensure a stress-free journey.
1. The King’s Head, Bishop’s Cleeve
- From Central or West Cheltenham:
Use Hyde Lane instead of the A435 to reach Bishop’s Cleeve. - From East Cheltenham:
Take the Prestbury to Southam Road (B4632), then use New Road to access Bishop’s Cleeve.
2. The Apple Tree, Woodmancote
- From Central Cheltenham:
Travel via Prestbury, the B4632, and New Road to reach Woodmancote. - From Gloucester or Far West Cheltenham:
Use Hyde Lane or, if coming from Gloucester, consider Stoke Road via Stoke Orchard for a smoother journey.
3. Winchcombe Route
This route is mostly unaffected by the closures, so you can follow your usual travel plans.
4. Cleeve Golf Club and The Rising Sun
Both locations remain accessible as usual, with no major detours required.
5. Whiskers Cafe, Prestbury
- From Bishop’s Cleeve:
Use the Easton Road (B4632) to reach Whiskers Cafe without disruptions.
6. Pittville Pump Room
- From Bishop’s Cleeve:
Again, the B4632 is the best route to take, connecting you directly to the Pump Room.
7. Aggs Hill
- From Bishop’s Cleeve:
The B4632 is the most suitable route to reach Aggs Hill.
8. Leckhampton Hill
- From Bishop’s Cleeve:
You can either use Hyde Lane or the B4632, depending on your starting point and preference. - From Bishop’s Cleeve:
Use the B4632, as it provides the most direct and convenient route to this east-side meeting point.
9. The Royal Oak, Prestbury
Plan Ahead for Smooth Walks
To ensure your journeys to and from walks remain hassle-free:
- Check Travel Times: Allow extra time for possible delays caused by diversions.
